A Little Mixed Media and a Lot of Stamps – Sketch 168

Standard

I love Sunday mornings; a new sketch, the Sunday paper, hot coffee…….Sigh.  As a “paper addict,” I have to admit I do anxiously anticipate the Sunday morning OWH weekly sketch challenge.

Sketch #168 is very versatile.  With so many layers, I saw an excellent opportunity to add texture, popups and a little mixed media.  Even with all the layers going on, it is easy to make this card look “flat.”  I added quite a bit of embellishment without making the card too thick to mail by using embellishments stamped and cut from paper.  Nothing on this card is over 1/8″ in high.  I used a lot of different stamp sets on both cards.  The stamp and supply list appears below.

I made a batch of cards yesterday (shown below) using these same components.  I had a pocket watch left over and loved the rabbit, so I wanted to make the sketch conform to the components I already had out.  Since my rabbit needed more than 3″ of vertical space, I flipped the 3″ x 3.25″ squares to accommodate it.  The sketch shows the components adhered directly to the card, but I wanted to use background “paper.”  Since I am dealing with an added quarter inch, all of my components are a little more squeezed together.

Thanks for stopping by, now go create!

My own card creation:

Beau is late

Beau is late

The soft appearance of the sentiment is intentional, as I wanted it to look more like a background.  The sentiment is repeated inside the card.

Stampers Best:  “White Rabbit – I’m Late”

Stampin Up:  “Clockworks,” (page 105 of current catalog – two step stamping, needs a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig).  The pocket watch is three separate stamps combined to make the watch and face.

Challenge Week March 17, 2013

Standard

I love waking up on Sunday Mornings to the Sunday Paper, and the Sketch Challenge.  As soon as I saw Sketch #164, I imagined it holding a large sentiment.  I had just received a great Thank You sentiment stamp from Stamper’s Best and thought it just perfect.  I recall a while back, Heroes asking for red/white/blue thank you cards they could send a note of thanks for care packages, etc… on.  I think this card is striking and simple at the same time.  I have to admit I cheated a bit, but achieved the same look by cutting one strip of red 5.5 x 1.5″ instead of two 1.5 x 2″ pieces.

Challenge #1 – Sketch Challenge – OWH Sketch #164

All of the paper is from SU, Nearly Navy, Cherry Cobbler and Whisper White card stock.  The DSP is from my stash, something I got off of the Clearance Rack a while back.  The stamp is from Stamper’s Best.  It is called “International Thank You.”  The Star embossing folder was from Cuttlebug.

Challenge #2 – Mid Week Throw Down “Ombr’e Card”

As I learned this week, an Ombr’e Card is a card that uses the same color graduating from light to dark.  For mine, I used a series of light yellow to oranges.  The idea for this card came from Jen Arkfeld “Flowers in a Jar” shown as the Inspiration piece.  I wanted to try and duplicate it, but didn’t have the same flower stamp.  The recipe for my version appears below the card.

Recipe for my card:  DSP; Attic Boutique and Polka Dot Parade/Ink and Card Stock Colors; Pumpkin Pie, More Mustard, Daffodil Delight, So Saffron, Whisper White, StazonOn Black/Stamp Sets; Flower Fest and Perfectly Preserved/Ribbon; Daffodil Delight Ribbon Seam Binding (wadded up then tied), Embellishment; White Tea Lace paper doily.  All supplies used were Stampin’ Up.

Christmas Challenge Cards

Standard

Had five wonderful days in the mountains, but challenges continue, even when you are gone.   Had to catch up, before the new weekly sketch challenge comes out tomorrow!

This first card completes two challenges.  Sketch #138 – Hero Arts and the Stamper’s Best Hero Christmas card challenge.

OWH sketch #138/Stampers’ Best&Hero Arts

Both Stampers’ Best and Hero Arts are wonderful companies who create stamps and are tremendous supporters of Operation Write Home.  For this card I used the following Stampin’ Up products:  Crumb Cake, Whisper White and Pool Party card stock.  I used Crumb Cake and Soft Suede inks.  The ribbon embellishment is Soft Suede dotted grosgrain (now retired).

The collage was created with two stamps, Santa Collage by Habico and the soldier silhouettes are Stampers’ Best.  The Thank You stamp is from Hero Arts.  The sentiment stamp is from DRS.  I embossed the blue card stock with a snow flake embossing folder.

Here is the sketch I used:  I flipped it to make a vertical card.

OWH Sketch Library #138

The second card is for the Color Challenge, to create a red and green card.

For this card, I used the following Stampin’ Up products:  Stamp sets, Lovely as a Tree and Warmest of Wishes (retired Hostess set).  The card stock is Cherry Cobbler, Whisper White and Garden Green.  The plaid paper is Frostwood Lodge (retired).  I used the Scallop Edge and the Decorative Label punches.  I used Cherry Cobbler and Garden Green Inks.  I created a little “snow detail” at the bottom of the tree by tearing Whisper White horizontally.

The bow was created with a silver elastic trim.

To give credit where credit is due, I have to thank my helpers, who were worn out by today’s card making.  Thank you Newton (on top) and Gadget for all of your help.
